The Cripple Creek Theatre Company presents the Tony-award winning musical RAGTIME this August at the Marigny Opera House.
The show runs Friday through Sunday, August 5-28.
Opulent and muscular, RAGTIME unpacks and remixes the birth of the moving picture, the Harlem Renaissance, and the American tradition of armed insurrection as a tool to combat tyranny and oppression. Amidst appearances from historical figures like Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, JP Morgan, Henry Ford and Emma Goldman, the show centers on Coalhouse Walker, Jr. - an outstanding jazz pianist who demands dignity for the future American man.
With RAGTIME, Cripple Creek continues its bold experiment of offering high quality professional productions to the general public completely free of charge. Cripple Creek's mission is to produce works of cultural, historical, and political significance in order to provoke the public into social action. Offering RAGTIME at no cost to the general public allows anyone, regardless of income, to take in a show that explores the currents of inequality running through America’s veins. Ingrained racism, distrust of foreigners, the struggle of labor vs capital, the ability of music to bridge cultural boundaries, and the desperate actions of abused individuals who see no future for themselves in our country all come to life through vivid storytelling.
Cripple Creek sees theatre as a necessary component of civic life - the same as clean water, paved roads, and safe streets. Now in its tenth year of work, CCTC is fortunate to partner with foundations and citizens equally committed to providing relevant creative experiences for the population of New Orleans. Thanks to generous contributions from the Arts Council of New Orleans, the Jazz and Heritage Foundation, Phelps Dunbar, and individual citizens committed to improving New Orleans, RAGTIME promises not only to be the theatrical event of the season, but also a moment where all New Orleanians can join together in song, story, and subversion.
Cripple Creek invites all individuals, groups, organizations, and subcultures to attend this momentous production.
RAGTIME features a spirited and diverse cast of 16, directed by Big Easy Award-winning Emilie Whelan and starring Amy Alvarez, Ashley Rose Bailey, Thaddeus Bailey, Shannon Flaherty, Jon Greene, Ian Hoch, Clint Johnson, Kate Kuen, Donald Lewis, April Louise, Jessica Lozano, Kevin Murphy, Andrew Vaught, Cameron-Mitchell Ware, Philip Yiannopolous and Angie Zeiderman.
